Step 1. In any resume, the first step must be to give the reader a way to contact the candidate applying for the position. The heading of the resume should contain the full name of the applicant as well as reliable contact information(i.e. Address, Phone, Email). Generally speaking this part of the resume is centered at the top however can be placed in the top right as well.

Step 2. The next section of the resume should state the goal of the resume. In Mid-level or Intermediate Resumes, it is not unusual (though not always suggestible) to place a sub-title beneath the applicant’s name and address. Regardless, it is standard practice to have an “Objective,” “Goal,” or “Career Focus” section where one may state their intentions. In addition to the ‘Objective” this part of the resume may contain some highlights of one’s qualifications or skills that may be relevant to the position being applied to. These sections should be titled along the lines of “Qualifications” and “Special Skills” respectively.

Step 3. In addition to the ‘Objective” this part of the resume may contain some highlights of one’s qualifications or skills that may be relevant to the position being applied to. These sections should be titled along the lines of “Qualifications” and “Special Skills” respectively. It is imperative to make sure to list past achievements or knowledge that directly relate to or have been mentioned in the job description for the ‘Qualifications’ section. The ‘Special Skills’ section may list skills that may be useful, if hired.

Step 4. The next section, which should visually be in the center of the page is reserved for one’s professional experience. Oftentimes, one may wish to call attention to one’s specific accomplishments in the past under the heading such as “Notable Accomplishments.” Either section may precede the other as this is a matter of taste.  The “Professional Experience” section should list previous companies one has worked in, positions held, dates worked, the city, the state, and short descriptions of one’s responsibilities in those positions. While there is no regimented order, the top line of each company should include the Position Held, Company, Name, Applicable Dates, and Location.

Step 5. Finally there should be an area of the resume for one’s academic achievements in “Education” and if applicable a listing of any additional skills which may be relevant to retail under the heading “Additional Capabilities” or “Related Skills.”
